Nomad Go Where

Taipei

A safe, efficient, food-obsessed capital with world-class transport, mountain hikes on the metro and a two-year nomad visa.
Taipei

Living and working here

Taipei suits remote workers who want a big city that simply works. It is exceptionally safe, spotlessly efficient and friendly, with night markets, hot springs and forested hiking trails reachable by metro. The pace is calmer than Tokyo or Seoul, and it appeals to tech workers, designers and anyone wanting a comfortable, longer-term base in East Asia.

Da'an is the most popular district for nomads, full of independent cafés, parks and good MRT links, while Zhongshan offers plenty of short-let supply and Zhongzheng, around Taipei Main Station, is a little cheaper. Xinyi is glossy and expensive but home to many offices. For desks, FutureWard Central, Keepworking, Connect Lounge in Da'an and WORKSPOT in Zhongshan all offer monthly plans from about NT$5,000, and many cafés welcome laptops outside peak hours.

The MRT and buses are cheap and frequent, an EasyCard covers everything, and the express train reaches Taoyuan airport in under 40 minutes. Fibre is fast and dependable, typically several hundred megabits, and power cuts are rare. Rents are the main expense: a furnished studio or small one-bed in a central district runs about NT$22,000 to NT$30,000 a month, so a comfortable life with coworking comes to roughly US$2,100. October to December is the most pleasant period; May and June bring the plum rains, July to September is hot with the risk of typhoons, and winter is cool and damp.

The downsides are cost, housing and weather. Taipei is far pricier than Southeast Asia, short-term furnished flats are small, and many landlords prefer one-year leases. Summer humidity is draining, winter drizzle is persistent, and English is less common away from central areas. The nomad scene is real but more dispersed than in Bali or Chiang Mai, so expect to build a social circle through meet-ups, language exchanges and hiking groups rather than finding one ready-made at your coworking space.
