Da Lat is the antidote to tropical heat. Sitting at around 1,500 metres in the Central Highlands, it has mild days and cool nights all year, pine forests, flower farms, French-era villas and a café culture that rivals Hanoi's. It suits remote workers who want to wear a jumper, hike at weekends and live cheaply in a small, creative town popular with young Vietnamese.
Most foreigners stay in the central wards around Xuan Huong Lake and the market, where cafés and restaurants are walkable, or in the quieter, cheaper residential streets a little further out. There is no large international coworking operator, so work happens mainly in cafés with good connections. WorkSpace Coffee Dalat (DALA247) near Xuan Huong offers a dedicated working room, One More Cafe has a coworking area, and The Married Beans and Daily Log Coffee are popular laptop spots. Budget about US$50 to US$80 a month on café work.
The town is hilly, so a scooter or Grab is more useful than walking for longer trips, and Lien Khuong airport is about 40 minutes away. Home fibre from Viettel or VNPT is quick and inexpensive, though café Wi-Fi varies a lot, so test before settling in. A furnished studio or one-bed costs about US$300 to US$450 a month, and a comfortable lifestyle comes to roughly US$1,000. The dry season from December to March brings blue skies and chilly nights; May to October is wet, with afternoon rain most days.
The drawbacks are isolation and limited infrastructure. The foreign community is small, English is limited outside tourist businesses, and there are few proper coworking spaces. Weekends bring crowds of domestic tourists and traffic around the lake, hillside fog can be damp and gloomy in the wet season, and houses rarely have heating, so cold snaps are felt indoors. Bring warm layers even if the rest of your trip is in the tropics.
