Dumaguete

A friendly university town by the sea with very low costs, easy diving at Dauin and Apo Island, and a calm pace that suits long, focused stays.
Dumaguete

Living and working here

Dumaguete suits nomads who want a low-cost, low-stress base rather than a scene. It is a compact university city, home to Silliman University, with a seafront promenade along Rizal Boulevard, a large retiree and expat population and a reputation as one of the friendliest places in the Philippines. Dauin's dive sites and Apo Island are within easy reach, and Valencia in the hills offers cooler air and waterfalls.

Most people stay in Piapi or along Rizal Boulevard for walkable access to cafés and restaurants, in quieter Bantayan if they have a scooter, or out in Dauin if diving comes first. Furnished apartments are cheap, typically USD 300–450 a month. Dedicated coworking is limited but growing: LFT Dumaguete on Hibbard Avenue advertises fibre, quiet zones and 24-hour member access, with day-use memberships from about PHP 1,500 a month, and Viranova PH offers a mix of coworking and study space. Many nomads simply work from cafés around Silliman University or from home.

PLDT and Globe fibre is available in central buildings and is usually adequate for video calls, but expect occasional drops and brownouts, especially during storms, so a power bank, UPS or mobile data backup is worth having. Tricycles cost a few pesos a ride and scooters are easy to rent. The city sits in a relatively sheltered position, with January to May the best period and June to November the wetter months. A comfortable month costs about USD 950.

The small scale is both the appeal and the limitation. The remote-worker community is modest and nightlife is low-key, so it can feel quiet after a few months. Beaches in the city itself are unremarkable, and the best are a drive away. Direct international flights do not exist, so most journeys route through Manila or Cebu, and healthcare, while decent, is not at big-city standard.
